The Bodo Archaeological Site & Centre offers experiential educational programs for students of all ages, both at our centre and site, and in the classroom. We have had thousands of students visit Bodo to take part in our interactive, hands-on activities and learning experience. Students learn about archaeology and the history of the Bodo Archaeological Sites and the Great Plains in a meaningful and memorable way. We offer in-person visits (1/2 day and overnight field trips) and in-classroom visits.

Winter is time for reflection on gardens and this event invites you to reflect on your local biodiversity. Do you have a diverse collection of plants in your neighbourhood? Have you noticed different kinds of insects? What about birds and mammals? Biodiverse gardens provide habitat for many animals. The variety of plants helps a garden be resilient to weather events and temperature fluctuations. As our city grows larger and yards become smaller, it is increasingly important for urban gardens, even patio and balcony gardens, to provide a variety of habit for the animals in our urban ecosystem. To help us consider options for growing biodiversity in our gardens, this year’s Think Spring! topics include moths, birds, urban biodiversity, and alternative lawn plants.

The Re-Energy program engages learners in grades 3-12 on the importance of renewable energy and explores the co-benefits and trade-offs of comparable energy systems. In this STEAM program, learners become renewable energy engineers by taking their learnings to the next level. Learners will use detailed construction plans to build working models of energy storage systems, solar ovens, solar cars, wind turbines, hydroelectric generators, and biogas generators and submit their project for a chance to win the Re-Energy Challenge. Learners are provided with relevant backgrounders to do an in-depth exploration of renewable energy technology. Prior to European colonization, Indigenous peoples got what they needed from the land and water around them. Indigenous peoples have relied on salmon since the fish became abundant in the Fraser River about 5000-6000 years ago. They used native plants for food, medicine, building materials and more. This program explores the connection between Indigenous peoples, salmon, and the broader Fraser River Basin. Students experience the movement of salmon, storytelling and oral histories, and the many uses of native plants through an Indigenous perspective.

Program Components:

Introduction to the First Salmon Ceremony through a storybook and discussion.

Understand the stages of a salmon’s life cycle and migration by acting out the story of one salmon’s life.

Learn about some of the edible and medicinal native plants in our region, and then create your own plant, including its uses.

Hear the story of how sockeye came to the Fraser River from two First Nations elders. View map of the traditional lands of the First Nations people in the Fraser River Basin, and use a visual metaphor to understand how long the First Nations people have lived along the Fraser River.

Our program serves students in grades 4-12 across British Columbia through interactive workshops and a four-week climate challenge. Elementary students (grades 4-7) participate in an engaging 60-minute workshop and complete 25 take-home actions with their families. High school students (grades 8-12) attend two advanced workshops over 4-6 weeks, exploring climate justice, systems analysis, and actionable solutions. Both programs empower students to reduce emissions and foster community impact. Workshops are delivered virtually or in person, with prizes and comprehensive resources provided.

In this program, students learn about pollution by examining different types of pollutants and where they come from. They will then evaluate how individual actions contribute to the health of the river. A slide presentation introduces students to the Fraser River, then the class breaks into smaller groups to explore pollution sources and the way pollution moves through our ecosystems and communities. Student’s also discuss the difference one individual’s actions can make.

Play a fun board game where students can watch how one person can make a difference against the pollution problem.

Our outdoor programs take place at the Fish Creek Environmental Learning Centre, at Shannon Terrace, 15931 Woodpath Rd SW, Calgary AB.

K-6 programs are teacher-led. Alberta Parks staff will provide the group with an in-depth orientation, and support the group throughout the day. Teachers are required to attend a 1.5 hour on-site orientation before the date of their program. Available for 2 classes per day, based on availability.

Grade 7-12 programs are led by an Alberta Parks staff member, who will be with your group for the entire day. Available for one class per day (max 35 students).

The Eco 360 program offers a flexible learning experience, featuring a variety of hands-on activities ranging from 1-3 hours. This program provides opportunities to expand learning through topics including types of plastics, waste in the environment, understanding the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals in relation to a circular economy and so much more! Educators and learners can select activities that align with their needs, making it a very adaptable program.
