Elementary students of all needs and ages have the opportunity to engage and learn through hands-on, inquiry-based programming. The Museum of Vancouver works with a diversity of groups. Whether you’re a school group, homeschool group, community organization, or day camp, we have something for everyone, both in person and online. Our outreach kits are designed for teacher-led delivery. Kits include hands-on materials, lesson plans and resources to support teaching and learning.

The invasive plant program takes place at the Weaselhead in SW Calgary and is a fully outdoor program that requires students to manually remove plants. The day will include several activities including:

● Introduction, Land Acknowledgement, park rules, and expectations

● Learning about invasive plants (their characteristics and adaptations, impacts and how to control)

● Invasive Plant matching game.

● Field Guide practice game.

● Botany walk to learn about native plants in the park

● Plant Scavenger Hunt

● Plant mapping

● Density Game

● Transects and Quadrats

● Invasive Plant removal in the Aspen Forest

● Invasive Plant Manager Game

This field trip is designed as a full day trip but can be shortened to half a day.

Prior to European colonization, Indigenous peoples got what they needed from the land and water around them. Indigenous peoples have relied on salmon since the fish became abundant in the Fraser River about 5000-6000 years ago. They used native plants for food, medicine, building materials and more. This program explores the connection between Indigenous peoples, salmon, and the broader Fraser River Basin. Students experience the movement of salmon, storytelling and oral histories, and the many uses of native plants through an Indigenous perspective.

Program Components:

Introduction to the First Salmon Ceremony through a storybook and discussion.

Understand the stages of a salmon’s life cycle and migration by acting out the story of one salmon’s life.

Learn about some of the edible and medicinal native plants in our region, and then create your own plant, including its uses.

Hear the story of how sockeye came to the Fraser River from two First Nations elders. View map of the traditional lands of the First Nations people in the Fraser River Basin, and use a visual metaphor to understand how long the First Nations people have lived along the Fraser River.

Through interactive activities and real-world examples, the guide introduces students to roles such as forest managers, conservationists, wildlife biologists, and environmental educators, highlighting the skills and expertise needed to protect and manage our forests sustainably. By exploring these green careers, students gain an understanding of the important work involved in environmental conservation and the significant role forests play in our ecosystem, inspiring future generations to pursue careers in environmental stewardship.

Join us for an interactive experience that will motivate students to take impactful steps towards reducing waste. The tours include a classroom workshop and a guided bus tour through the landfill.

Grades: 4 - 7
Program length: 3 hours total (90-minute landfill bus tour/ 90-minute classroom).
Class size: Up to 2 classes (30 students per class) per day.

Cost: No cost for tours, but schools must provide and arrange bus transportation.
Location: The Composting Facility at the Shepard Waste Management Facility (11920 68 St SE).

Waste in Our World offers children the chance to work cooperatively build a model landfill and use it to look at ways to divert waste and make our landfills safer for the environment. This is an inquiry-based opportunity that fully engages participants in hands-on learning and incorporates several cross-curricular competencies.

Algonquin College's Play, Learn, and Teaching Outdoors in the Early Years certificate program immerses early learning professionals in outdoor pedagogical practice through the Outdoor ECE National Framework of the Canadian Centre for Outdoor Play. In this program, you explore concepts of active engagement, nurturing holistic development, and building meaningful connections in outdoor pedagogical practice.

Learners explore the benefits of risky outdoor play, strengthen a justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion lens, and build cultural competency guided by evidence from the Canadian Pediatric Society. They gain advocacy, communication, and practical skills through place-based learning and a culminating action-research project applied to their own professional setting.

Upon completion, graduates are prepared to champion inclusive, culturally responsive outdoor play in diverse contexts, including early learning programs, kindergartens, child and family centres, community health agencies, and governmental or non-governmental organizations serving children and families.

This program runs for a total of 1 hour and dives into the details of these careers, gaining insights into the daily realities, challenges, and rewards of working with animals. The goal of this program is to encourage curiosity, inspire youth with future career paths and highlight the many ways people can make a positive difference in the lives of animals.

In this experiential course, Grade 10-12 students will learn through site visits, hiking tours and guest speakers about everything that connects them to the environment. The 3-credit course is part of the Career and Technology Studies area of the Alberta curriculum. Students will learn about topics from human-wildlife coexistence, vegetation identification and waste water treatment to energy production, Îyethka traditional knowledge, Indigenous practices to care for the land and the Nakoda language. Created in partnership with SCWIST (Society for Canadian Women in Science and Technology), this course will inspire youth to love and protect our environment, to engage with STEM education, and will expose students to a diversity of female role models.

Specifically designed for high school students, this course engages students on a variety of topics in ocean conservation including overfishing, marine protected areas, climate action and ocean pollution, through the lens of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In the final module, the course will highlight several women-identifying marine scientists who are doing revolutionary research in this field.

Life Below Water is best suited to students Grades 8-12, and connects to Core and Curricular competencies in science, social studies, career education, and physical and health education. This course can be self-led by independent students or guided by an educator, and can be used in schools, community/ youth groups, or other educational settings.

These online, self-paced resources will teach students all about killer whales, including the different ecotypes that reside in British Columbia, and the threats to these incredible species at risk. Students will develop group Action Projects, gaining skills in teamwork, organization, and leadership.

These resources are best suited to Grades K-12, and focus on Core Curriculum and Competencies connections in science, social studies, and physical and health education. Resources can be reviewed in a single session (est. 1.5 hours completion time), or used over multiple sessions. Student Leadership for Change (SLC) is a free online library of interactive eco-social learning resources that explores over 40 topics. The resources support students to meet curriculum requirements, take meaningful action in their communities and foster skills in critical thinking, problem-solving, team collaboration, and socio-emotional connection. 

SLC includes lesson plans for teachers based on our 5 modules, a range of fun engaging activities, and Action Packs for students to conduct research, engage in reflective dialogue and take action. It is bet suited for grade 5-12 but can be adapted to different age groups.
