Engage students in an interactive online course, where students will be exposed to Coast Salish environmental knowledge, the Southern Resident Killer Whales, and the threats facing these species at risk. Students will learn to become effective environmental stewards, making a real difference in protecting the ocean.

This five-hour, virtual course offers a self-paced online experience, ideal for students who can engage independently with minimal guidance. The course can also function as guided lessons or activities between students and teachers. Through interactive learning modules and hands-on projects, students will gain insight into the Salish Sea, orca behavior, and the broader impacts of human activities on marine ecosystems. The course incorporates the rich knowledge and history of the Coast Salish peoples, highlighting their connection and stewardship of the Salish Sea. Students will be inspired through this course to take sustainable action to protect orcas, and become environmental stewards.

Kids & Youth Camps

From day-camps on the coast to overnight wilderness camps, Fireside offers a welcoming, adventurous summer for children and teens. Programs include gourmet outdoor cooking, parkour and filmmaking camps, wilderness introduction, leadership training, environmental education, and more. Whether ages 5 or 17, young participants are encouraged to explore, grow, and discover confidence in nature. 

World Bound — Climate, Culture & Leadership

In response to the critical urgency of climate change, Fireside created the “World Bound” series — experiential climate-leadership and cultural immersion courses for youth, young adults, and educators. These expeditions blend outdoor adventure with deep learning, cultural exchange, climate-change education, and direct engagement with nature and communities. Locations span from Yukon and Canada to Fiji, South America, Japan, and beyond. 

These courses are designed to give participants both knowledge and empowerment: they learn to navigate wilderness, understand environmental and social issues, build leadership skills, and return home equipped to contribute meaningfully to their communities.

Educator Courses & Adult/Educational Adventures

This program will show students how to predict and prepare for extreme events using a stream table, a tool that can simulate river processes. Students will also have a chance to conduct their own research about how their communities may be at potential risk and to propose solutions. Students will be able to share those ideas with guest scientists through a follow-up online workshop.  

*NOTE: This program is currently only being held as an in-person field-trip.

Grades 3-5  

Students explore the basics of climate science and river processes. Using a stream table model, students model different climate change scenarios and design infrastructure that could mitigate the damage caused by climate change. 

Grades 6-12  

Students discuss connections between climate change and land management practices, both traditional Indigenous and current industrial. Using a stream table model, students model different climate change scenarios and design infrastructure that could mitigate the damage caused by climate change. For the optional action project, students research how their communities may be susceptible to extreme weather events and climate change and present their findings using ArcGIS Story Maps. A follow-up online workshop connects students to knowledge holders.

Basic river landscape geomorphology as well as traditional and industrial methods of flood risk management 

How climate change will impact infrastructure planning across the Fraser River Basin 

Analytical and design thinking to create action plans towards mitigating future natural disaster incidents that will be available to local community leadership 

Students will receive 3D printed models and Climate Action Science Spotlight briefs relevant to their research

In this program, students learn about pollution by examining different types of pollutants and where they come from. They will then evaluate how individual actions contribute to the health of the river. A slide presentation introduces students to the Fraser River, then the class breaks into smaller groups to explore pollution sources and the way pollution moves through our ecosystems and communities. Student’s also discuss the difference one individual’s actions can make.

Play a fun board game where students can watch how one person can make a difference against the pollution problem.

Water Rangers’ fun and easy tools help students (ages 12+) explore water quality using their senses and scientific tools. Our free online lessons and teacher guides show how to plan outings, connect activities to different subjects, and adapt materials for all ages. Kits are available for purchase, and we may be able to help with funding! Community-based water monitoring is a great way to spark curiosity, connect with nature, and collect important data to help protect our water. Student Leadership for Change (SLC) is a free online library of interactive eco-social learning resources that explores over 40 topics. The resources support students to meet curriculum requirements, take meaningful action in their communities and foster skills in critical thinking, problem-solving, team collaboration, and socio-emotional connection. 

SLC includes lesson plans for teachers based on our 5 modules, a range of fun engaging activities, and Action Packs for students to conduct research, engage in reflective dialogue and take action. It is bet suited for grade 5-12 but can be adapted to different age groups.

Farm to School BC brings healthy, local, and sustainable food into schools across British Columbia and provides students with hands-on learning opportunities that develop food literacy, all while strengthening the local food system and enhancing school and community connectedness. The F2SBC team includes Regional Coordinators to provide localized support across all 60 school districts in BC, including independent and First Nations schools, divided into 5 geographic areas. Specific program activities include:

Prior to European colonization, Indigenous peoples got what they needed from the land and water around them. Indigenous peoples have relied on salmon since the fish became abundant in the Fraser River about 5000-6000 years ago. They used native plants for food, medicine, building materials and more. This program explores the connection between Indigenous peoples, salmon, and the broader Fraser River Basin. Students experience the movement of salmon, storytelling and oral histories, and the many uses of native plants through an Indigenous perspective.

Introduction to the First Salmon Ceremony through a storybook and discussion.

Understand the stages of a salmon’s life cycle and migration by acting out the story of one salmon’s life.

Learn about some of the edible and medicinal native plants in our region, and then create your own plant, including its uses.

Hear the story of how sockeye came to the Fraser River from two First Nations elders. View map of the traditional lands of the First Nations people in the Fraser River Basin, and use a visual metaphor to understand how long the First Nations people have lived along the Fraser River.

Wildsight Invermere is a local branch of Wildsight regional, a not for profit organisation working on conservation efforts around the Kootenays in British Columbia. We undertake a range of programs from our Junior Ambassador outdoor education and stewardship program coming in 2026, to our annual Wild & Scenic Film Festival that has been running for 12 years. We facilitate community outreach opportunities to engage community members in current conservation monitoring, lake clean up events, home retrofit fairs, get outside kids programs, as well as our new Bike Valet program running all summer at the Invermere Farmers Market. Wildsight Invermere offer a range of volunteer opportunities and education workshops for kids of all ages, parents, First Nations peoples, young professionals, adults of any age and demographics and backgrounds, and retirees.
