The Bodo Archaeological Site & Centre offers experiential educational programs for students of all ages, both at our centre and site, and in the classroom. We have had thousands of students visit Bodo to take part in our interactive, hands-on activities and learning experience. Students learn about archaeology and the history of the Bodo Archaeological Sites and the Great Plains in a meaningful and memorable way. The Beaverhill Bird Observatory (BBO) is the oldest bird observatory in western Canada and has been monitoring the local breeding and migratory birds since 1984.The BBO conducts research focused on monitoring bird populations and environmental education.

In the winter months, BBO runs our BirdSmart Education Program where staff bring a live educational bird of prey to give presentations to schools, daycares, after-school groups, senior’s residences, and private and other events. Most presentations are 60 minutes, with adapted 30 minute presentation for Pre-K/Kindertgarten audiences, or groups that require a shorter time frame.

Created in partnership with SCWIST (Society for Canadian Women in Science and Technology), this course will inspire youth to love and protect our environment, to engage with STEM education, and will expose students to a diversity of female role models.

Specifically designed for high school students, this course engages students on a variety of topics in ocean conservation including overfishing, marine protected areas, climate action and ocean pollution, through the lens of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In the final module, the course will highlight several women-identifying marine scientists who are doing revolutionary research in this field.

Life Below Water is best suited to students Grades 8-12, and connects to Core and Curricular competencies in science, social studies, career education, and physical and health education. This course can be self-led by independent students or guided by an educator, and can be used in schools, community/ youth groups, or other educational settings.

In this experiential course, Grade 10-12 students will learn through site visits, hiking tours and guest speakers about everything that connects them to the environment. The 3-credit course is part of the Career and Technology Studies area of the Alberta curriculum. Students will learn about topics from human-wildlife coexistence, vegetation identification and waste water treatment to energy production, Îyethka traditional knowledge, Indigenous practices to care for the land and the Nakoda language. The Energy Revealed program offers a flexible range of activities for junior and senior learners, with lessons that can be completed in as little as one hour, up to 1 week. Shorter lessons include classroom energy audits and tracking energy use, while activities like building and testing solar ovens, or generating energy through physical activities may span 3-5 days or up to a week. This flexible timing allows educators to choose lessons that best fit their schedule while still offering meaningful, real-world learning experiences.

Flexible outdoor education programming available for kindergarten through grade 12 taking place in Weaselhead Park in SW Calgary. All students will learn about the Weaselhead Special Protected Area in Calgary while making Alberta curricular connections in science and social studies. All classes are guided through the park by our trained Naturalists with activities ranging from identifying tracks and signs to invertebrate pond dips, plant identification, removing invasive plants and conducting water quality and human impact studies. Each grade level has targeted learning outcomes and suggested activities but there is flexibility to focus on topics of interest to specific classes in the park. Kindergarten through grade 2 classes are typically scheduled for a half day (2 1/2 hours) from 9:30am-12pm while grade 3-12 can be either a half day or a full day (5 hours). Programs run from September-November and April-June.
