In this experiential course, Grade 10-12 students will learn through site visits, hiking tours and guest speakers about everything that connects them to the environment. The 3-credit course is part of the Career and Technology Studies area of the Alberta curriculum. Students will learn about topics from human-wildlife coexistence, vegetation identification and waste water treatment to energy production, Îyethka traditional knowledge, Indigenous practices to care for the land and the Nakoda language. Farm to School BC brings healthy, local, and sustainable food into schools across British Columbia and provides students with hands-on learning opportunities that develop food literacy, all while strengthening the local food system and enhancing school and community connectedness. The F2SBC team includes Regional Coordinators to provide localized support across all 60 school districts in BC, including independent and First Nations schools, divided into 5 geographic areas. Specific program activities include:

•Annual Farm to School BC grants program that opens each October

•Webinars covering a variety of food literacy topics throughout the school year

•Educator resources, lesson plans, toolkits, and activity ideas for in and outside the classroom in any season

•School Garden Mentorship resource library with recorded webinars and resource lists taking you through building or enhancing a school garden program month-by-month

•Pro-D and Regional Gathering events and opportunities

•Connections to local food producers, organizations, districts, and businesses to assist with individual educator and school inquiries

The Climate Policy Quest program is designed to be flexible, with each activity taking approximately 1-2 hours to complete. The program begins with foundational activities and lessons on climate science, current impacts of climate change, and how these issues shape our world. Learners then progress to three key lessons introducing climate policy, exploring the need for policies, and Canada’s specific role in climate policy, before culminating in a hands-on activity where students design their own policies.

The Bodo Archaeological Site & Centre offers experiential educational programs for students of all ages, both at our centre and site, and in the classroom. We have had thousands of students visit Bodo to take part in our interactive, hands-on activities and learning experience. Students learn about archaeology and the history of the Bodo Archaeological Sites and the Great Plains in a meaningful and memorable way. We offer in-person visits (1/2 day and overnight field trips) and in-classroom visits.

LunchLAB is an innovative school meal program that serves students accessible, nourishing, culturally relevant lunches prepared by students with the mentorship of a team of chefs-in-residence. LunchLAB empowers youth to cook food for themselves and their peers providing opportunities for kids to find delight, dignity, and belonging in their interactions with food. 

Lunches change each day and menus are inspired by the communities we serve. Each meal includes a fresh salad bar and a hot item, whether that’s tacos, chickpea curry, palak paneer, ramen soup, or lasagna, it’s sure to be packed with delicious flavours and fresh veggies.

We offer a sliding scale pay-what-you-can model to balance affordability for families and the long-term sustainability of LunchLAB. As part of the registration process, families decide what they can afford with opportunities to receive a subsidy or subsidize families in their community.

Through the lens of The 7Rs – strategies to reduce waste and rethink fashion consumption – a wide range of culminating Action Projects support students to envision and create their own hope inspiring actions that promote responsible citizenship and a more sustainable future.

WILDNorth offers free, curriculum-specific presentations for Grades 3, 4, 5, and 6 in Edmonton thanks to Capital City Cleanup. There is a cost of $80 to book this presentation for schools outside of Edmonton.

Grade 3 – “Food Chains, Wildlife, & My Community”

This 45-minute presentation is designed to introduce Grade 3 students to the intricate relationships between animals, plants, and their environment. Students will learn about food chains, how energy moves through the environment, and explore a food web using examples of local wildlife and vegetation. Linked directly to the Living Systems unit, this program offers a fun and tangible way for students to learn how plants and animals interact with one another while developing an awareness and appreciation for backyard nature.

Grade 4 – “Litter, Wildlife, & My Community”

Since a clean community is a shared responsibility, WILDNorth and Capital City Clean Up have joined forces to deliver the “Litter, Wildlife & My Community” classroom program. Educational and entertaining, this 60-minute presentation directly links to the Waste and Our World unit. It illustrates how litter harms wildlife and helps students identify actions they can take to minimize litter’s impact on wildlife.

Grade 5 – “Body Systems, Wildlife, & My Community”

This 60-minute presentation is designed to introduce Grade 5 students to the fascinating world of animal anatomy, diving into the body systems that support survival in the wild. Students will explore how the digestive, respiratory, circulatory, and musculoskeletal systems function in different animals, including birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians. This program offers an engaging way for students to understand the vital processes that allow animals to thrive in their environments while fostering a sense of responsibility for protecting local wildlife.

Grade 6 – “Ecosystems, Wildlife, & My Community”

This 60-minute presentation is designed to deepen Grade 6 students’ understanding of ecosystems, the complex interactions that sustain them, and the vital role wildlife plays within them. Students will investigate the characteristics and components of ecosystems, focusing on the intricate relationships between animals, plants, and their environment. This program offers an engaging exploration of local ecosystems, including forests, wetlands, and grasslands, while highlighting how Alberta’s wildlife are specially adapted to their habitats. In this program, students learn about pollution by examining different types of pollutants and where they come from. They will then evaluate how individual actions contribute to the health of the river. A slide presentation introduces students to the Fraser River, then the class breaks into smaller groups to explore pollution sources and the way pollution moves through our ecosystems and communities. Student’s also discuss the difference one individual’s actions can make.

EcoCooks Elementary consists of two modules and EcoCooks Secondary consists of four modules. Classes can take any number of modules, in any order.

Each EcoCooks module has four sessions and each session is about 60-70 min long. These four sessions are typically taken over the space of 1 to 4 weeks. The first three sessions tackle the environmental component with fun hands-on activities designed for a classroom space, while the last session is a cooking class where students learn how to apply their new knowledge while preparing food. This cooking session can be done in a traditional classroom space or in a specialized foods room.
