The EcoSchools program is both a framework and a toolbox for taking action and engaging in environmental education. 

For students, the program provides opportunities for leadership, peer-to-peer mentorship, and a way to learn about sustainability while having fun. For teachers, the program integrates seamlessly with curricula across Canada and offers unique opportunities for learning.

PLT Canada's Trees and Me guide introduces young learners to the critical importance of the environment and forests through a variety of engaging, hands-on activities. Designed to connect children with nature, the guide fosters an understanding of the many benefits that trees and forests provide, such as clean air, wildlife habitats, and climate regulation. It encourages environmental stewardship by promoting actions that nurture and protect our natural world. By exploring forests' vital role in sustaining life, children develop a lifelong appreciation for nature and the responsibility to care for it.

This online, self-paced, and interactive version of Sea Smart's Clean Water Champions Workshop will educate students about freshwater pollution, its impacts on the ocean, and what students can do to inspire sustainable action in schools and communities.

Through informative video lessons and engaging activities, students will learn about the importance of freshwater, and the main threats to freshwater globally, including eutrophication, toxic chemical pollution, and plastic pollution. Students will complete group Action Projects, working in teams to take action against water pollution and raise awareness about important threats to marine ecosystems.

This online course is best suited to Grades 6-9, and fulfills B.C. Core and Curricular Competencies. This course is available online nationwide and can be used in school classrooms, community/ youth groups, and other educational settings.

Join us for an interactive experience that will motivate students to take impactful steps towards reducing waste. The tours include a classroom workshop and a guided bus tour through the landfill.

Grades: 4 - 7
Program length: 3 hours total (90-minute landfill bus tour/ 90-minute classroom).
Class size: Up to 2 classes (30 students per class) per day.

Cost: No cost for tours, but schools must provide and arrange bus transportation.
Location: The Composting Facility at the Shepard Waste Management Facility (11920 68 St SE).

Created in partnership with SCWIST (Society for Canadian Women in Science and Technology), this course will inspire youth to love and protect our environment, to engage with STEM education, and will expose students to a diversity of female role models.

Specifically designed for high school students, this course engages students on a variety of topics in ocean conservation including overfishing, marine protected areas, climate action and ocean pollution, through the lens of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In the final module, the course will highlight several women-identifying marine scientists who are doing revolutionary research in this field.

Life Below Water is best suited to students Grades 8-12, and connects to Core and Curricular competencies in science, social studies, career education, and physical and health education. This course can be self-led by independent students or guided by an educator, and can be used in schools, community/ youth groups, or other educational settings.

Winter is time for reflection on gardens and this event invites you to reflect on your local biodiversity. Do you have a diverse collection of plants in your neighbourhood? Have you noticed different kinds of insects? What about birds and mammals? Biodiverse gardens provide habitat for many animals. The variety of plants helps a garden be resilient to weather events and temperature fluctuations. As our city grows larger and yards become smaller, it is increasingly important for urban gardens, even patio and balcony gardens, to provide a variety of habit for the animals in our urban ecosystem. To help us consider options for growing biodiversity in our gardens, this year’s Think Spring! topics include moths, birds, urban biodiversity, and alternative lawn plants.

This field trip is offered in spring (April, May, June) at our schoolyard farm in Coquitlam. A field trip to Suwa’lkh School (1432 Brunette Ave, Coquitlam) is like no other Fresh Roots field trip. Our program space includes a native plant propagation greenhouse, medicine and food gardens, and a seven-acre forest with a forest classroom and a salmon stream. Field trips at Suwa’lkh focus on First People’s ways of knowing, helping students connect with Traditional Ecological Knowledge, in both cultivated and natural food lands. Suwa’lkh field trips are co-facilitated, whenever possible, with an Indigenous knowledge keeper and have been designed in consultation with Indigenous knowledge keeper Carrie Clark.

All field trips include a farm work experience, as well as a chance to harvest and taste veggies, when seasonally available. We require 1 teacher/chaperone for every 8 Grade K-5 students at our Coquitlam site.

Field Trip Workshops - We offer 8 workshops for grades ranging from K - 9 covering topics such as Coding, Chemical Reactions, Sustainability & more.

Professional Development - Science World is proud to offer Professional Development workshops to help enrich your classroom teaching with STEAM experiences for grades K - 12. These workshops are offering in person and virtually.

Bursaries - Thanks to our Science of Cocktails event each year we are able to offer Bursaries to underfunded schools to visit Science World for free. Our bursaries for the 2024/2025 school year have already been awarded. Bursaries for the 2025/2026 school year will open in late August/early September 2025.

Future Science Leaders (FSL) - Our after school program, FSL is a 26-week long science enrichment program for teens to engage in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art & design and math) wit like-minded peers. Applications are now open until April 30th 2025.

Girls & STEAM - This program, offered through workshops and livestreams encourages participants ages 12-14 to pursue their scientific interests and explore protentional career fields by giving them access to STEAM opportunities
