Every class in your school receives an age-appropriate lesson about your local watershed, the wildlife within it, and how to protect it from storm drain pollution. Children then paint their Dreamfish, which becomes part of a permanent fence mural installed by professional designers. The fish represent each student's dream of a healthy future for our freshwater habitats, while the mural reminds everyone that, even though we can't always see our creeks and other waterways, what we do impacts them.

With Aquatic Species at Risk, educators will have the tools to guide students in their learning about incredible ocean creatures. This online, self-paced course will teach students about Basking Sharks, Steller Sea Lions, and more. Students will participate in hands-on activities and meaningful discussions that will encourage curiosity about the ocean. Students will create Action Projects in groups, brainstorming inspiring and creative ways to spread awareness about threats to ocean life. By the end of this course, students will feel empowered to create meaningful change in their communities to protect aquatic species at risk.

Included in this course are guided slides and video content, additional student resources, and educator grading rubrics for Action Projects. Educators will also gain access to a Teacher Information Package, which includes information on how to best guide students through the course and Action Project design.

Best suited for students Grade 3-8, Aquatic Species at Risk connects with Core and Curricular competencies. This course can be taught in schools, community/ youth groups, and other educational settings.

This online, self-paced, and interactive version of Sea Smart's Clean Water Champions Workshop will educate students about freshwater pollution, its impacts on the ocean, and what students can do to inspire sustainable action in schools and communities.

Through informative video lessons and engaging activities, students will learn about the importance of freshwater, and the main threats to freshwater globally, including eutrophication, toxic chemical pollution, and plastic pollution. Students will complete group Action Projects, working in teams to take action against water pollution and raise awareness about important threats to marine ecosystems.

This online course is best suited to Grades 6-9, and fulfills B.C. Core and Curricular Competencies. This course is available online nationwide and can be used in school classrooms, community/ youth groups, and other educational settings.

In partnership with Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), we are excited to deliver a hands-on program about freshwater pollution and how it connects to the ocean.

Sea Smart’s highly trained staff of marine biologists and environmental educators will visit your classroom to deliver three inquiry-based workshops. Your students will work in groups to create stewardship projects (i.e. projects to raise awareness and care for the environment) to engage their schools, and communities in diverting pollution from freshwater systems and the ocean.

Available for Grades 3-12, this program connects to Core and Curricular Competencies. Clean Water Champions can be taught across Metro Vancouver and the Lower Mainland, this program can be delivered in schools, community/ youth groups, and other education settings.

The Re-Energy program engages learners in grades 3-12 on the importance of renewable energy and explores the co-benefits and trade-offs of comparable energy systems. In this STEAM program, learners become renewable energy engineers by taking their learnings to the next level. Learners will use detailed construction plans to build working models of energy storage systems, solar ovens, solar cars, wind turbines, hydroelectric generators, and biogas generators and submit their project for a chance to win the Re-Energy Challenge. Learners are provided with relevant backgrounders to do an in-depth exploration of renewable energy technology. Further explore how students at a Calgary high school converted a 1975 Volkswagen Beetle, and how your students can build electric vehicle prototypes through GreenLearning’s Electrifying the Future program.

In this experiential course, Grade 10-12 students will learn through site visits, hiking tours and guest speakers about everything that connects them to the environment. The 3-credit course is part of the Career and Technology Studies area of the Alberta curriculum. Students will learn about topics from human-wildlife coexistence, vegetation identification and waste water treatment to energy production, Îyethka traditional knowledge, Indigenous practices to care for the land and the Nakoda language. We offer educational tours for the UBC Botanical Garden, Nitobe Memorial Garden, and the Greenheart TreeWalk. As part of the Faculty of Science, we strive to deliver ecology and environmental learning grounded in science and place-based learning. Sustainability is a key theme of our tours and we aim to raise awareness of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.  Our tours can be tailored to all age groups and knowledge levels and range from 1 to 2 hours in length. Located at UBC, we serve groups located in or visiting the Greater Vancouver Area. We offer our tours from Wednesday-Saturday between the hours of 10:00am and 4:30pm.

NatureKids BC is a nature discovery and environmental action organization that helps children form meaningful and enduring connections with nature alongside their families. Organized by our local nature club leaders, Explorer Days are packed with fun and learning for the whole family! We offer over 200 Explorer Days annually to our members through our province-wide network of nature clubs. At these events, your family will explore nearby nature, learn about BC ecosystems, and meet other families enthusiastic about the natural world. You might go pond dipping for aquatic insects, learn about plants in the forest, or explore local tide pools. The expertise and guidance of our Nature Mentors means that the range of activities is endless! Parental involvement is required on Explorer Days.

Did you know there’s a 6-meter-long, 100-year-old fish living in the Fraser River? Learn all about the endangered white sturgeon through interactive activities, with both Indigenous and Western science perspectives. Students will listen to a First Nation’s story about sturgeon, construct theories from available research, and communicate their learning through art.

This program incorporates the First Peoples Principles of Learning, specifically that learning is relational; recognizes the role of indigenous knowledge; is embedded in story; and requires recognizing the consequences of one’s actions. Eligibility
Youth ages 14-18 who identify as Indigenous, Black, People of Colour, 2SLGBTQIA+, living with a disability, or from other equity-denied communities.

Supports
You will receive up to $20/day honorarium based on attendance and youth must attend a minimum of 4 program days to receive an honorarium. Lunch and bus tickets are provided. We also have some outdoor clothing available to borrow, including rain jackets and boots.

These online resources will provide educators with tools to teach students about the interconnection of waterways and the pervasiveness of plastic pollution. Through interactive, hands-on activities, students will understand watersheds and how plastic pollution impacts the ocean, and the marine creatures and plants that call it home. These resources will empower students to question the use of plastic in their own lives and communities and take action to reduce their personal plastic waste.

Best suited for Grades K-12, From the Streets connects with Core and Curricular Competencies in subjects such as science, social studies, and physical and health education. Ocean Design Lab is an innovative program that will inspire curiosity and passion for future ocean heroes. This program will educate students about the environmental damage caused by overfishing.

This two-hour workshop begins with an informative lesson highlighting the environmental consequences of bottom trawling. Students will then collaborate in teams to redesign fishing nets to minimize environmental impact. The teams will build and test their prototypes in a friendly competition.

Students will use provided materials and a pretend budget to build their nets while learning important skills like problem-solving and teamwork. Ocean Design Lab helps students understand how different fields work together to address environmental challenges for a sustainable future.
